Mid-Century Modern vs Contemporary - Which Is Right For You?

Two words you’ll frequently hear when it comes to choosing your bedroom furniture are ‘mid-century modern’ and ‘contemporary.’ Both themes are quite popular in bedroom decor - as well as for the rest of your home furniture - and both are used interchangeably.

However, there are some significant differences between the two styles and it’s important to understand them before you choose the right one for you:

1. Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern refers to a decorating style that rose to popularity in the mid 1900s (1950s and 1960s). Breaking away from earlier decorating styles, this modern movement embraced simple lines and neutral colors.

Color Scheme
The mid-century color scheme is mostly neutral such as white walls and gray/cream furnishings.

You can add touches of color from home accessories such as artwork or small accent furniture pieces. Colors which are favored include orange, blue, red and yellow.

Bedroom Furniture Style

Modern furniture typically has a long and low shape. Rather than boxy pieces that sit directly on the floor, consider bedroom furniture that is raised up on legs - typically made from chrome or other metal.

This gives your bedroom an open, simple and airy feel.

Bedroom Furniture Material

Although traditionally, mid-century modern was associated with wood-frame furniture with leather/linen upholstery, the new look has stretched to include molded plastic, plywood and chrome.

2. Contemporary

Contemporary style is not tied to a specific time period, but rather refers to the styles, materials and ideas that are popular in the current day. Because of that, a contemporary design is a fluid concept that changes with:

  • Trends
  • New Technology
  • Lifestyle changes
Color Scheme

Just like with the mid-century modern style, neutral colors are still predominant. However, you are much more likely to see colorful accents in touches such as overstuffed upholstery, layered fabrics and quirky artwork.

Bedroom Furniture Style

Just like with modern furniture, contemporary bedroom pieces feature plenty of chrome, glass and wood. The angles are prominent and the edges sharp.

Stunning high gloss finishes are often the preferred finishing choices. Just like with the mid-modern style, ornamentation and intricate carvings are lacking.

Bedroom Furniture Material

Textiles in this decor style are usually in natural fabrics such as silk, cotton, linen and wool. They come in neutral colors with the occasional bold pattern or color in an accent piece.
